Caffe Panna Graham Central Dedication Ice Cream Review

Review

Caffe Panna’s Description: Vanilla bean brown sugar graham cracker ice cream, our signature buttery graham crunch, chocolate honeycomb crunchies, and a graham infused marshmallow swirl. A dedication to one of our favorite pint flavors from Handel’s ice cream

Vanilla Bean Brown Sugar Graham Cracker Ice Cream: A creamy, rich, thick base with a strong, sweet vanilla flavor. The inclusion of crushed graham crackers in the base is a nice touch, adding some texture. But wow: there isn’t much base. This pint is 80% mix-ins and 20% base (and maybe less).

Butter Graham Crunch: Maybe this is a reference to the graham cracker crumbs that are mixed throughout the base and marshmallow swirl. What’s nice is the crumbs don’t seem soft or soggy. Some of the larger once are even crispy. They do have the flavor and texture of graham crackers. Many brands struggle with the graham crackers in a s’mores flavor, but Caffe Panna pulls it off.

Chocolate Honeycomb Crunchies: These are chocolate covered honeycomb candy pieces. The chocolate is a dark flavor. The honeycomb is crunchy, sugary. The honeycomb sticks to your teeth when you chew it. Most of the honeycomb is on top of the pint. But there’s some mixed throughout as well. Some pieces are pretty big and provide a nice crunchy texture.

Graham Infused Marshmallow Swirl: This is marshmallow fluff mixed with graham cracker crumbs. The fluff has a sweet homemade marshmallow texture and flavor. It’s not frozen at all, always soft and creamy. As mentioned before, the included graham cracker crumbs have a bit of a crunch and aren’t soggy, a nice contrast against the marshmallow. And there’s a ton of marshmallow swirl. This pint is more marshmallow fluff than base.

Overall: Caffe Panna’s Graham Central Dedication is smore’s overload. It’s more mix-ins than base. Don’t get me wrong: all the ingredients are top notch. From the vanilla graham cracker base to the graham crunch to the chocolate covered honeycomb to the marshmallow swirl: these are ultra-premium quality. But there’s more—much, much more—mix-ins than base. This pint is 80% mix-ins and 20% ice cream. Too many mix-ins, I’m afraid.

The marshmallow swirl is perhaps the biggest problem—at some point it felt like I was just eating chilled marshmallow fluff from a jar, not a pint of ice cream.

I know I always complain that premium ice cream brands need to be generous with the mix-ins. But this is like a “monkey’s paw” cursed wish scenario. I complained that there wasn’t enough mix-ins, so then I have to eat nothing but mix-ins forever. Cue the Twilight Zone theme.

So let the monkey’s paw hear my revised wish: “Be generous with the mix-ins, but not out of proportion to the base. It’s still a pint of ice cream, after all, and not a pint of candy. Moderation in all things—yes, even in decadence.” 6/10.
