Ice Cream Review Caffe Panna Sweet Do

Review

Pint Description: Callebaut chocolate chip studded brown sugar and Heilala vanilla bean ice cream with chunks of salted chocolate chip cookie dough. The base has molasses notes that bring out the depth in the dough that @SweetDoughNYC makes for us!

Brown Sugar and Heilala Vanilla Bean Ice Cream: Heilala Vanilla beans are unique premium Tongan vanilla beans and they make a difference in this pint. Often vanilla bases are so mild it’s difficult to tell whether the base is just a simple sweet cream or actually intended to be vanilla-flavored. But I can really taste and appreciate the vanilla in this pint.

The base texture is thick, rich, luxurious—ultra-premium perfection. It’s pretty sweet, perhaps from the added brown sugar, and I love it. There’s also a smoky aftertaste, perhaps from the molasses. Happily there’s no earthy or vegetable aftertaste, which sometimes accompanies molasses. It’s a complex, unique base flavor—every taste is a delight. I could eat this base alone without the mix-ins and have no complaints whatsoever. Simply delicious.

Callebaut Chocolate Chips: Callebaut is a Belgian chocolate brand. These are squares of chocolate roughly 1/4 inch across, but the size is not uniform. It’s not the typical ganache you get for chocolate chips in ice cream, often even in premium ice cream. Instead, you can tell this is high quality chocolate because it’s so savory, so flavorful. It’s darker than milk chocolate and melts in the mouth easily. The pint is overflowing with chocolate chunks—an all caps GENEROUS amount on every single spoonful. The most chocolate chips I’ve ever seen in an ice cream pint. Wonderful.

Salted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Chunks: For the most part, these are big one inch hunks of cookie dough; only a few smaller chunks. The salty dough is a good contrast against the sweet base and chocolate chunks.

There are chunks of chocolate in the cookie dough, but they seem to be a different kind of chocolate than the chocolate chips in the rest of the base as they don’t melt as easily. So more of a crispy texture to the cookie dough chocolate chips. The dough is soft, not frozen solid—easy to chew; they will also melt away in your mouth if you really want to savor them. I had at least 5 – 6 large cookie dough chunks in my half pint serving. Fun fun fun.

Overall: Caffe Panna Sweet Do is the best—the platonic ideal—of cookie dough ice cream. The balance of the base and the mix-ins is perfect, which is to say the mix-in amount is extremely generous without ever being too much. The vanilla base is bold, flavorful and rich. So often I just have to take a brand’s word that a base contains vanilla—not so with this delicious base. I could eat this ice cream base all day without any mix-ins and still have with no complaints—it’s just that good.

The chocolate chunks are gourmet Belgian chocolate and plentiful; they lean dark or semi-sweet in flavor. Similarly, the cookie dough chunks are gigantic and spread everywhere throughout the pint. The chocolate in the cookie dough seems different than that in the chunks; it’s crispier, adds texture. The total effect is a complex cookie dough pint that’s addictive. This pint simply blows away any competition for this flavor. A decadent, gourmet triumph. Highly recommended. 10/10.
