Ice Cream Review Acme Valley Salted Caramel

Review

Disclaimer: Acme Valley sent me a complimentary box of ice cream pints to review. Thanks, Acme Valley! While the free pints provide me the opportunity for this review, Acme Valley has no control over the opinions expressed.

Sweet Cream Base: The base of Acme Valley ice creams is pretty dense. The company calls it stretchy and says it’s partially due to lack of air in the ice cream. Expect it to be “taffy-like,” especially straight from the freezer. Let the ice cream temper on the counter for 10 or 15 minutes and the texture becomes more typical.

The base is smooth and creamy. It’s pretty sweet with a light caramel flavor. Perhaps some of the caramel sauce dissolved into the base, thus the concentrated sweetness. Regardless, it’s premium quality and enjoyable, especially if you have a sweet tooth like mine.

Salted Caramel Sauce: There are globs of caramel sauce swirled into the base. The texture of the caramel sauce is pretty thick, but still soft enough to scoop, not frozen solid.

It initially has a pretty salty flavor, then the caramel hits after that—a nice one-two combo of salty and sweet. It goes together well with the base that is sweeter but not salty. For me, the saltiness does fades after a while. There’s a moderate amount of caramel, but I’m thinking too much more would’ve been too much—too sweet.

Overall: I have to admit I do enjoy caramel ice cream and caramel flavors generally. And I enjoyed this pint pretty well. The base and the caramel swirl are both premium quality. But if I had to make a suggestion for improvement, I would say that adding another mix-in might result in a more interesting flavor and texture—perhaps something like chocolate chunks, cookie pieces, or nuts. It’s a crowded premium ice cream market with crazy flavors full of mix-ins. To thrive in such a competitive, cutthroat market may require more flavor innovation.

Score: 8/10
