Review

Something was off with this ice cream pint. As you can see from the picture, it was topped with only a few candy sprinkles—unlike the pints posted in other online reviews with numerous candy sprinkles on the white chocolate ganache. Also, the top of the pint was about half an inch or so below the rim, as if part was missing—some production line error perhaps. And some of the pint had leaked out above the ganache topping, forming a strange foamy, cratered bubble that didn’t look very appetizing. But here’s the review nonetheless.

Sweet Cream Base: B&J’s standard sweet cream base. No excessive iciness was detected, so it didn’t suffer from freezer burn. The portion that foamed above the ganache seemed thin, airy, and weak. Otherwise, the base was consistent with B&J’s usual above average quality. As a base, it was a bit of a missed opportunity to add some flavor to this pint other than another variation on “sweet.”

Strawberry Swirl: The strawberry swirl was thinly spread throughout the pint, too thin to isolate. Yet, it was distributed so that most every spoonful had some strawberry flavor—specifically an intense strawberry jam flavor, sweet and fruity. A delightful swirl that left me wanting more.

Pie Crust Pieces: Bland, doughy pie crust bits, in a variety of sizes, most small, but a few of medium size, lacking flavor, not buttery or toasty, but adding great texture, some carbs. The pie crust held up well against the base—none particularly soggy. I could bite and crunch on the pie bits. A better mix-in texture than most of Jeni’s cake pieces which tend to be soggy and bland, having dissolved into the base.

White Chocolate Ganache: A soft ganache of moderate thickness, easy to spoon, with a very sweet white chocolate flavor. It melts in your mouth if you pause to savor it. Perhaps white chocolate chunks throughout the pint would have created a better pint. Sorry Talenti, Magnum, Haagen-Dazs, and B&J—but toppings and layers are gimmickry.

Candy Sprinkles: Small hard candy sprinkles, crunchy, colorful, but without any flavor other than that of crystalized sugar. As you can see in the picture, there are very few sprinkles on this pint, likely due to a production line error. The sprinkles added some texture and visual appeal, but other than that just more sweetness, no real flavor. And the last thing this very sweet pint needed was a sprinkling of more sugar.

Overall: Ben & Jerry’s Strawberry Topped Tart is quite sweet—sweet cream base, sweet white chocolate topping, sweet sugar sprinkles, sweet strawberry jam swirl. Yes, ice cream is supposed to be sweet, but for me, this one was a bit much—and that’s coming from someone with a huge sweet tooth. But the real problem for me: my pint had half an inch of empty space at the top, only a scattering of candy sprinkles, and some foamy base bubbling over the ganache—nothing like the pint on B&J’s website or the pints I’ve seen reviewed by others. Opening the top, I cringed. “Should I even eat this?” was my first thought. Perhaps the levels of the other mix-ins were off as well, not just the candy sprinkles. I’d have to sample another pint to tell. I’ve frankly never seen this level of defective product before from B&J or any other brand. Yes, the elements of a great pint are there: the strawberry flavor was good, the pie crust added texture—but a thicker strawberry swirl and flavored, not just sugary candy sprinkles would level this pint up considerably. (Also: how do crystallized sugar candies make this pint more similar to a strawberry pop tart?) 5/10.
