Vanilla Pudding Ice Cream: It looks like a cookies-and-cream base—brownish from all the cookie crumbs. The base smells and tastes like Oreos, but there’s also a sweet, milky flavor. “Vanilla pudding” is how the label describes the base. But I’m not tasting it. Instead, it’s almost chocolatey from all the chocolate sandwich cookie crumbs.
Sandwich Cookies: A chocolate cookie sandwich very similar to Oreos. A variety of cookie chunks throughout—from tiny crumbs to larger pieces over an inch long. The smaller pieces are soft, not soggy. But the larger pieces have some crunch, some texture. A generous amount of cookie chunks everywhere, some with every bite.
Chocolate Swirls: Uncertain what the chocolate swirls are supposed to be. There is no additional mix-in in this pint other than cookies. Perhaps the chocolate swirls are the cookie crumbs mixed into the base? I don’t know. Just don’t expect anything in the base besides cookie pieces.
Milk Chocolatey Ganache Top: The texture and flavor of a magic shell. It melts quickly in your mouth. Sweet and chocolatey.
Chocolate Cookie Crumble Top: On top of the chocolate ganache, there is a thin layer of chocolate cookie crumbs. Still crunchy, adding texture. The ganache is so sweet, it’s impossible to taste any flavor from the cookie crumbs, but I assume they are the same cookies mixed into the pint.
Overall: Ben and Jerry’s Topped Dirt Cake is a great cookies-and-cream flavor. B&J describes the pint as “Vanilla Pudding Ice Cream with Chocolate Sandwich Cookies & Chocolate Cookie Swirls Topped with Milk Chocolatey Ganache & Chocolate Cookie Crumble”. But to me, it’s not really a version of dirt cake because there’s no discernable vanilla pudding element. The pint text claims the base is “vanilla pudding” flavored, but I can’t taste it.
The base may be vanilla flavored, but it’s a subtle flavor largely overwhelmed by the profusion of chocolate wafer cookies everywhere throughout the pint. Perhaps the addition of a vanilla pudding swirl would’ve nailed a dirt cake flavor more successfully. This pint is absolutely loaded with chocolate sandwich cookie mix-ins. So if you’re a cookies-and-cream fan, then you’ve found your new favorite B&J pint. Recommended on that basis. 8/10.
