Review

Mint Ice Cream: A smooth, creamy, mint base. A mild, cool mint. Refreshing, not too sweet. B&J’s typical, high quality base.

Chocolate Cookie Swirls: The swirl consists of chocolate wafer cookies—similar to Oreo wafers without the cream filling—crushed into crumbs. The swirls are sometimes thin, lost in the mint ice cream. But even the thin swirls are surprisingly crunchy—sogginess is not an issue here. The swirl adds a strong texture that stands up well against the base.

Mint Chocolate Cookie Balls: Medium-sized, maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch in diameter, mint chocolate balls. A fair amount, not overly generous. But there’s a lot going on in this pint already, so I have no complaints about the amount of this mix-in. The cookie balls will melt in your mouth. Some taste more of milk chocolate, others of cookies. The flavor and texture reminds me of a Thin Mint Girl Scout cookie. I couldn’t taste much mint in these cookies over and above the mint already provided by the ice cream base.

Topping—Chocolate Cookies and Chocolatey Ganache: The pint topping was milk chocolate ganache with cookie pieces strewn on top. The cookie pieces were about 1/4 inch wide and quite soft. I wouldn’t describe them as soggy, just soft. The chocolate ganache texture was similar to that of a chocolate shell. It quickly melts in your mouth. I just wish the cookie pieces were a bit crunchier. The topping provides a strong burst of chocolate in contrast to the minty ice cream base.

Overall: Ben & Jerry’s Topped Thick Mint has a mild, smooth mint base and plenty of chocolate—ganache, cookie crumb swirls, and mint chocolate balls. My pint was absolutely packed with mix-ins and I enjoyed it much more than I was expecting. This pint was pretty obviously conceived by B&J as an homage to Girl Scout Thin Mints—the pint flavor name being “Thick Mint” instead of “Thin Mint.” Regardless, B&J created a great flavor here. I’m not usually a big fan of chocolate and mint flavors, but the generous crunchy chocolate cookies made this pint as addictive as a box of Thin Mints. Recommended. 8/10.
