Ice Cream Review Ben & Jerry's "Topped" Tiramisu

Review

Mascarpone Ice Cream: The base is rich and creamy, premium quality. But it’s difficult to taste the mascarpone. The chocolate and coffee flavors obscure it.

Fudge Swirls: Copious fudge swirls throughout the base. The flavor of Hershey’s chocolate syrup, but perhaps a bit thicker in consistency. It’s on every spoonful, giving the base a predominantly chocolate flavor.

Shortbread Pieces: Not really shortbread pieces, more like shortbread batter—soft and wet. A good amount throughout the pint, some medium or larger chunks, as you can see from the pictures. Not very flavorful or sweet, but that’s shortbread—so I can’t really complain there. It provides a helpful, welcome contrast against the chocolate.

Chocolatey Ganache: Normally these “Topped” flavors are covered in ganache. But the topping on this pint had sunk below the surface of the ice cream and accumulated into a ½ inch slab of ganache—so thick it couldn’t be cut with a spoon. Appeared to be a manufacturing defect. The slab was so thick I had to pick it up with my fingers and bite off pieces of it. It was still the typical, good ganache from this line of pints—sweet, chocolatey, melting quickly in my mouth.

Espresso Fudge Chunks: Just a handful of ¼ inch wide espresso fudge chunks on top of the chocolate ganache. A different chocolate texture and a strong, bitter punch of coffee flavor. They stood out against the ganache, acting as an effective contrast.

Overall: Ben & Jerry’s “Topped” Tiramisu is a great take on the classic Italian dessert. The extremely generous amount of mix-ins—chocolate ganache, espresso chunks, fudge swirl, and shortbread pieces—made for a decadent treat. It’s a very chocolatey interpretation of tiramisu, due largely to the extreme amount of fudge swirl.

But beware—this pint has a punch of coffee flavor to it as well. If you’re not a coffee lover, the first few tastes may be too much. For me, the coffee works—it’s a bold bitter flavor that contrasts well against the sweet chocolate. The shortbread—a stand-in for sponge-cake ladyfingers—while not overly flavorful, provides a pleasant texture and necessary respite from the big coffee and chocolate notes. One of the better “Topped” pints. Recommended. 8/10

There are so many layers to this mascarpone masterpiece, from the espresso-laced fudge flakes embedded in rich ganache topping to the captivating coffee character of the fudge swirls. We’d say this “pick me up” of a flavor is top tier-amisu!
