Chocolate Base: A darkish chocolate, surprisingly flavorful. It’s sorbet, not ice cream. So it includes no dairy or eggs, and has none of the creaminess or richness that those provide either. The ingredients include coconut milk, but I can’t taste it. Yes, it has the typical iciness of a sorbet. But there’s a bit of maltiness as well, with more thickening or density than a typical sorbet, perhaps from the chicory root powder listed in the ingredients. It’s pleasant, refreshing, tasty—better than expected.

Raspberry Base: The raspberry has more of a traditional sorbet texture and flavor—icy—and none of the thickening found in the chocolate. It’s fruity, even citrusy, probably from the included lemon juice. The citrus hits first, then a bit of raspberry in the background. Yes, icy, but that’s what I would expect from a sorbet.

Overall: Ciao Bella Chocolate Raspberry Sorbetto is a refreshing treat, combining two strong flavors that pair well together. It reminds me of a dark chocolate candy with raspberry filling—but in the form of ices. Judging this pint as a sorbet and not comparing it to premium ice cream, it’s pretty good. I would recommend it as a summer snack on a hot day. But my first love will always be ultra-premium ice cream, regardless of the weather. There aren’t many premium sorbet pints out there on store shelves now–a real niche product. In fact, Ciao Bella’s freezer footprint seems to be fading–the company was purchased by High Road in 2018. As I write this review, Ciao Bella doesn’t even have a functioning website anymore. They may not be long for the store freezer. You might grab a pint before this venerable 1980s NYC brand disappears entirely. 6/10.
