Review

The Coolhaus website describes this pint as: Salted Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream, graham cracker cookie butter marshmallow swirl, dark chocolate squares.

But to the contrary, the pint front identifies the flavor as: Vanilla marshmallow ice cream with chocolate squares and a graham marshmallow swirl.

Ice Cream Base: Thick, creamy, rich, mildly sweet. Flecks of vanilla are plentiful everywhere in this pint. No salt or marshmallow flavors are detected, however. And it’s a mild vanilla despite all those vanilla bean flecks—a vanilla largely obscured and overwhelmed by the caramel swirl flavor. The vanilla peaks through only when I isolate the base on my spoon without the caramel or chocolate mix-ins.

The Swirl: The swirls is a buttery caramel with a rich cinnamon flavor. No marshmallow flavor or graham cracker cookie butter flavor detected in the swirl, regardless of the claims on the pint and website. It’s a very sweet and bold swirl, but mostly found only on the top and sides of the pint. Despite its liquid texture, the swirl hasn’t dissolved into the base—so quite successful as a caramel swirl. It has a strong cinnamon flavor which tends to flavor the bland base well. There wasn’t too much swirl in my serving, but it had a strong flavor that went a long way.

Dark Chocolate Squares: Crispy dark chocolate chunks. Thicker, richer, more bitter than a typical ganache. They don’t melt in the mouth very easily. About 1/4 inch square pieces, though some are smaller pieces. A moderate amount of them, but less than what you get from Ben & Jerry’s or Graeter’s.

Overall: Coolhaus Campfire S’mores is not a s’mores flavor because it lacks marshmallow and graham cracker mix-ins or flavors. The front pint blurb identifies the flavor as: “Vanilla marshmallow ice cream with chocolate squares and a graham marshmallow swirl.” To further confuse the matter, the Coolhaus website suggests the pint contains: “Salted Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream, graham cracker cookie butter marshmallow swirl, dark chocolate squares.”

To my taste, salt is entirely missing in action. There’s no marshmallow flavor to the base. And while the flecks of vanilla bean are plentiful, the vanilla taste is fairly subtle, easily overwhelmed by the swirl’s flavor. The swirl is a delicious dark cinnamon caramel, thick on the pint top and sides, mostly absent from the middle of the pint. But Coolhaus promised some variation of “graham cracker cookie butter marshmallow swirl” and the swirl isn’t that. Caramel is not marshmallow, and, yes, I can tell the difference at this point.

The dark chocolate squares are crispy and bitter—a good, standard mix-in, if not overly generous in amount. So to sum up: this is a pint of vanilla ice cream with chocolate chunks and a cinnamon caramel swirl—which is fine, but not the ingredients for s’mores. 6/10.
