Sweet Cream Gelato: A smooth, creamy, sweet gelato base—sweet but not too sweet, never cloying. Perhaps less rich than some other premium brands, a basic base. It provides a gentle, milky flavor—a neutral base to build the pint on.

Dulce de leche: Thick swirls of dulce de leche top the pint providing rich, decadent caramel flavor. It overwhelms the base, but it’s so good we had no complaints about the generous serving on the top. The dulce de leche diminishes rapidly as you dig down into the pint—the bottom has effectively none at all. It’s so rich that perhaps some would feel this is the proper amount of dulce de leche. But we were left wanting more. The dulce de leche swirl is so good that it is reason enough alone to purchase this pint.

Dark Chocolate Pearls: These “pearls” are not chocolate pieces or cookie pieces. They’re small, round pellets—hollow, very crispy. The texture is reminiscent of Rice Krispies, raw breakfast cereal, crunchy and light, not soggy at all. They do add a subtle dark chocolate flavor, but no sweetness. That dark chocolate contrasts nicely against the dulce de leche. And the pearls are everywhere in the pint, well-distributed randomly throughout, making for an unusually crunchy experience. Ordinarily we would be in favor of a contrasting texture provided by a mix-in such as these pearls. But something seems strange or off about their texture. A true chocolate—chips, chunks, slivers—would have been preferable. Dolcezza is an Argentine-style gelato. Their flavors are inspired by gelatos found in Argentina. Perhaps these crispy, crunchy, chocolate pearls are used in Argentine gelato shops. The back blurb on the pint suggests this is supposed to be “milk and cookies done the Argentine way”—so perhaps the chocolate pearls are similar to a type of cookie in Argentina.

Overall: Dolcezza Tramontana is a dulce de leche delivery system, and for that we are thankful. But the chocolate pearls weren’t to our liking, reminding us of raw breakfast cereal in their crunchiness. A true darkchocolate mix-in would’ve improved this pint, playing well against the gentle base and the delicious, decadent caramel swirl.
