Banana Peanut Butter Chip Ice Cream is one of three flavors in the Haagen -Dazs “Decadent Collection” line. The other two are Midnight Cookies & Cream—which may have been discontinued as it no longer appears on the Haagen-Dazs website–and Honey Salted Caramel Almond.
Banana Ice Cream: A rich, creamy, fruity banana base, but not overly sweet. It has a strong, natural banana flavor when tasted alone. It was not strong enough, however, to stand up against the mix-ins when they were on the spoon together. But it’s a good, flavorful if somewhat mild base to build upon.
Peanut Butter Swirl: The peanut butter swirl is quite hard when frozen, but melts in the mouth into a soft, bold, smooth peanut butter. Ample peanut butter swirl everywhere throughout the pint, including some enormous chunks that in their size and irregular shape remind of us of some Graeter’s chocolate chunks. Most every spoonful is liable to have some peanut butter swirl on it, which tends to overwhelm the base flavor pretty quickly. But it’s a delightful mix-in, and we can’t fault any brand for being generous with their mix-ins.
Chocolate Bits: Generally smaller than chocolate chips, these chocolate bits are also plentiful throughout the pint, but in shorter supply than the peanut butter. A dark chocolate flavor that melts in your mouth. They provide some contrast against the peanut butter and banana flavors.
Overall: Haagen-Dazs Banana Peanut Butter Chip offers a great flavor combination. Admittedly, the amount of peanut butter swirl is somewhat out of proportion to the banana and chocolate elements, but some careful spoon-work will ensure you savor each of the three, delicious flavors here. As one of the three pints in the “Decadent Collection” lineup has apparently already been discontinued, you might be well advised to grab some Banana Peanut Butter Chip before it vanishes from the freezer case as well.
