Ice Cream Review Haagen Dazs Coffee Chocolate Brownie

Review

This pint is from the Haagen-Dazs City Sweets collection.

City Sweets is available in five flavors: Dulce de Leche Churro, Coffee Chocolate Brownie, Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel, Summer Berry Cake Pop, and Black & White Cookie.

Coffee Ice Cream: The base was rich and creamy with a strong coffee flavor that moved to the background as I tasted the mix-ins—a coffee flavor strong enough to taste but one that doesn’t overwhelm the mix-ins. It was also sweet enough to be palatable to those who don’t typically like coffee flavors.

Gooey Brownie Swirl: This was not really a swirl, but instead thick, medium-sized globs of uncooked brownie batter. It had a sweet, darker chocolate flavor which worked well against the other flavors in the pint. The texture was not too hard, not too soft—a Goldilocks “just right” gooey texture. There was an adequate amount of gooey brownie, and with everything else going on, I had no complaints.

Espresso Chocolate Sauce: A rich, thick, sweet chocolate sauce without much coffee flavor. The ingredients include coffee in the chocolate sauce, but I couldn’t taste coffee over all the competing chocolate flavors. It was a darker chocolate than that in Hershey’s syrup. The chocolate sauce mostly ran down the center of the pint, which you can see in the pictures. It worked well with the other ingredients, but there could have been more of it.

Crunchy Cocoa Nibs: Small bits of roasted cocoa beans were everywhere throughout the base, resulting in multiple nibs on every spoon. They added a satisfying amount of crunchiness. The flavor reminded me of roasted coffee beans, with just a hint of chocolate in the background, which effectively combined the coffee and chocolate themes of this pint.

Overall: Haagen-Dazs’s Coffee Chocolate Brownie has a lot going. The pint description reads: “coffee ice cream is swirled with gooey brownies, rich espresso chocolate sauce and crunchy cocoa nibs.” The coffee ice cream was strong enough to taste against all the chocolate flavors in the mix-ins, but tempered with sweetness so as not to offend those sensitive to coffee. A neat trick.

The gooey brownie and the chocolate sauce were both enjoyable mix-ins—rich, decadent, premium quality—and generous in amount so I had no complaints about the mix-in ratio. The chocolate nibs were interesting—they provided crunchy texture and a chocolate flavor so bitter that it reminded me of coffee. A better quality pint than any other in the Haagen-Dazs City Sweets line—but probably only recommended for those open to coffee flavors. 8/10.
