Haagen Dazs Tres Leches

Review

Rum Tres Leches is one of the flavors from the boozy Haagen-Dazs “Spirits” pint line that includes Amaretto Black Cherry Almond Toffee, Bourbon Praline Pecan, Bourbon Vanilla Bean Truffle, Irish Cream Brownie, Rosé & Cream, and Whiskey Hazelnut Latte. So, yes—many options to try from this quite extensive line.

Let’s get this definition out of the way, so we can understand what dessert Haagen-Dazs is emulating or deconstructing with this pint: tres leches cake (which translates to “three milks cake”) is typically sponge or butter cake doused with three kinds of milk—evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream. Now on to the elements of the pint.

Rum Base: For those who don’t like alcohol in their ice cream, be forewarned: expect a surprisingly strong hit of rum upon first taste. But this quickly disappears into the background as one rapidly adapts to this liquor flavor. It leaves only a slight, but pleasant rum aftertaste on subsequent spoonfuls, replaced instead by the bright and refreshing sweet cream base. Other than the rum, it’s a pretty standard, premium quality sweet cream base consistent with the Haagen-Dazs brand. Well, upon further reflection, there is one unusual quality to the base: it’s always soft to scoop, even before any tempering, straight from the freezer. This is probably due to the alcohol content as well as the unique variety of sugars in the ingredients list—cane sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and powdered sugar.

Tres Leches Cake Chunks: The tres leches chunks are those typical of any tres leches cake dessert—bland white spongecake, quite doughy, somewhat soggy from the base infusing into it. If you like those qualities in your tres leches cake—and we do—then you will be generally pleased with this mix-in. Chunk sizes are small to medium, of a moderate number, well-distributed everywhere throughout the pint. Just don’t expect a chunk on every spoon. But Haagen-Dazs has captured some of the guilty pleasure of a goopy, sweet, carb-heavy tres leches cake in this pint.

Dulce de Leche Swirl: Unfortunately, there’s not enough dulce de leche swirl to sample. A few small brownish spots hint that they might at one time have been the missing dulce de leche element. And that’s the problem with any caramel swirl in an ice cream pint—the caramel must be thick enough to survive mixing into the base. If the caramel is too thin, it disappears upon being mixed in, fusing and dissolving into the base. And that’s what happened here. This seems like a big missed opportunity by Haagen-Dazs to add an extra rich caramel flavor to this pint.

Overall: Haagen-Dazs Rum Tres Leches is a fair attempt to capture the decadent, goopy joy of a slice of tres leches cake in ice cream pint form. The cake chunk mix-ins work, although a few more chunks would have leveled this pint up. And the base is delicious if you like rum and a very sweet cream. But the dulce de leche swirl is entirely missing in action. Still, we recommend a taste of this unique flavor, with a wistful thought to what a truly great pint this might have been with the inclusion of thick gobs of dulce de leche. 7/10.
