Ice Cream Review Haagen-Dazs Summery Berry Cake Pop

Review

Strawberry Ice Cream and Sweet Ice Cream Swirl: As you can see from the cross section pictures, this base was roughly 1/3 sweet cream and 2/3 strawberry. And this isn’t really a swirl of two flavors. Instead, the two bases are simply clumped next to each other in the pint.

The sweet ice cream base had a pleasant dairy flavor, a mild sweetness, and a rich, smooth texture.

The strawberry ice cream base had a pretty mild fruit flavor—so mild I initially thought the flavor was raspberry until I read the pint description. The strawberry flavor was subtle enough that after a few tastes, I couldn’t taste it anymore. Happily it wasn’t icy—a pitfall common to many fruit-based ice creams. There were a few small strawberry bits throughout, but again these were free of ice.

Cake Pieces: Chunks of dense, flavorless cake pieces are well-distributed throughout the base. The pint describes them as “perfect, fluffy.” I would not call them fluffy in any sense, and the texture was harder, denser, than cake should be. Maybe they absorbed some liquid from the base, though they weren’t soggy. If anything, most of the chunks were dry. And the chunks taste like a generic white cake with no discernable flavor. There were a variety of cake chunk sizes—small crumbs, six medium-sized chunks, and three larger big boys in my half of the pint.

Raspberry Sauce: There’s not much raspberry sauce in this pint. I found some about halfway through my serving. That’s a shame because it added a burst of sweet-tart fruit flavor to a pint that otherwise lacked strong flavors. The texture of the sauce was like a thin jam.

Overall: Haagen-Dazs’s Summer Berry Cake Pop sounds like a good concept for a summer pint—berry ice cream and cake pop mix-ins. The pint description reads: “We swirl velvety strawberry ice cream with sweet cream ice cream, add perfect, fluffy cake pieces and then finish with a tangy raspberry sauce.”

But cake pops are supposed to be balls of moist, frosted or ganache-coated cake. And that’s not what this ice cream contained. Instead, the cake chunks were dry, bland, dense white cake with no frosting or ganache included. Not cake pops, just cake, and flavorless cake at that. So not great.

The raspberry sauce swirl was sweet and tart, but there was very little of it—as in, I had only one taste of it. Stingy.

And the supposed swirl of strawberry and sweet cream bases wasn’t a swirl. The two flavors were just clumped side-by-side in the pint, about 1/3 sweet cream and 2/3 strawberry. The strawberry base was fine, rich and smooth, but not very flavorful. And sweet cream doesn’t add much of anything to this combination but filler. Underwhelming.

To me, Haagen-Dazs suggests luxury and decadence—the original premium ice cream brand. But that’s not what this pint delivered. Basically all HD did was throw some dry, stale cake chunks in a pint of strawberry ice cream, add one squirt of raspberry sauce, and call it “Summer Berry Cake Pop”. No effort, no hustle. No thanks. 6/10.
