Review

Rich Vanilla Ice Cream: Plain Jane vanilla? Nah. This base tastes like an amazing cake batter—rich, sweet, decadent. I’m telling you: this stuff is addicting. Perhaps the caramel swirl dissolved into the base, changing the flavor from vanilla to something closer to cake batter. But whatever—it’s great. More please.

Dark Chocolate Covered Pretzel Pieces: Most of the pretzel pieces had separated from the chocolate coating. The chocolate pieces are moderately sized chunks of dark chocolate, larger than bits or flakes. An adequate amount of them. Of course I’d always like more, but there’s enough that I don’t feel slighted. The chocolate doesn’t melt as quickly as some ice cream chocolate pieces. It’s a mild dark chocolate, not especially bitter.

Mostly 1/2 inch to 1 inch pieces of pretzels. Some were too soggy, lacking any crunch, perhaps because they became separated from the chocolate coating that could have protected them from the base. And there weren’t many pretzel pieces in the pint either—a few more crunchy, truly chocolate-coated pretzel pieces would level this pint up.

Caramel Swirl: Just a couple faint swirls of caramel. That’s it. Not thick enough to really get a good taste. I believe the caramel dissolved into the base—to great effect, making it richer, sweeter, flavorful. So many pints I sample with a caramel element have this problem. I’m not sure what the trick is to prevent a caramel swirl from dissolving in the base. But a thicker, more generous swirl would improve this pint—and perhaps stand a chance of surviving the trip from the factory or scoop shop to the customer’s home.

Overall: Humphry Slocombe Caramel Pretzel Swirl reminds me of an old favorite—Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby, minus the peanut butter element. The base is stellar, so rich it tastes like cake batter. The caramel swirl may have dissolved into the base, giving it this extra sweet, decadent flavor that I found quite addicting. There certainly wasn’t much caramel swirl evident in this pint, as the pictures show. The pretzels had largely separated from their dark chocolate coating. The dark chocolate itself was a good contrast against the sweet base. And the salty pretzels would’ve been another good contrast in taste and texture. But many of them were soggy, providing little or no crunch. Despite these minor quibbles, I couldn’t get enough of this pint. And that is the final word on what makes a great flavor—it’s addictive. I recommend trying this one. It’s a limited edition offering from Humphry Slocombe, so grab it while you can. 8/10.
