Review

Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream: Oops. Not the quality I’ve come to expect from Humphry Slocombe. Icy on top, icy throughout. The ice is obvious in the picture of the open pint top. And a small chunk of ice is visible in the picture of the half pint in a bowl. But that was by no means the only ice in this pint—it was everywhere. I don’t know the cause it. A manufacturing flaw? Something that happened during shipping? A flawed recipe? The other Humphry Slocombe pints I bought at the same time aren’t plagued by ice. Even after I allowed it to temper, this pint was still fairly icy—the chunks were just too big to melt quickly. But ignoring that fatal flaw, the base was otherwise dense, flavorful, and not overly sweet. It had a strong but not overpowering matcha flavor. Not quite as rich or thick as some other Humphry Slocombe flavors, but pleasant, refreshing. If not for the iciness, I would’ve enjoyed it.

Snickerdoodle Cookies: Medium to large-sized, soft snickerdoodle chunks. They could have had a bit more cinnamon and sugar flavor to the snickerdoodle, especially to compete and contrast against the matcha flavor. Not generous in amount, but a fair to adequate number. Good size—a few biggies are seen in the split in half pint picture. I was always searching for more snickerdoodle chunks—one sign of a great mix-in. Again, not perfect, but enjoyable nevertheless.

Overall: Humphry Slocombe Matchadoodle was an enjoyable pint with a fatal flaw—ice chunks. The matcha base was top tier, if you ignore the ice. The snickerdoodle chunks were tasty, a good contrast against the matcha. Yes, a few more chunks—and with a touch more cinnamon and sugar—would have improved the pint. But the ice chunks were the fatal flaw here. Without the ice, I would give it another 2-3 points. But for $12 per pint via Goldbelly, I expect better, and thus this score. 5/10.
