Review

Peanut Butter Base: A smooth, dense but noticeably mild for a peanut butter base. Not very sweet either. It’s enjoyable if you aren’t fond of a bold peanut butter flavor. I prefer a bolder, sweeter peanut butter ice cream myself, especially if it’s going to play against some chocolate.

Fudge Ripple: The generous pool of fudge on the pint top made my heart race a little. But then scooping the pint into bowls I discovered there was only a few, very thin ribbons of fudge spread throughout the pint, and none at all toward the bottom of the pint. The chocolate fudge has a good flavor. Thick, almost malty in texture, syrupy when it tempers, but a step above Hershey’s syrup. The generous top layer contrasts well against the subtle peanut butter base, perhaps overwhelming it somewhat. But, except for the top of the pint, there really isn’t enough fudge ripple in this pint. The few thin fudge ribbons vanish against even the weak peanut butter base. Once I ate the fudge from the top, it was pretty much a plain peanut butter base ice cream. Underwhelming. Chocolate and peanut butter ice cream is usually an easy win, a great combination. Instead, this pint fails to wow.

Overall: Humphry Slocombe Peanut Butter Fudge Ripple is not the peanut butter and chocolate pint you are looking for. It’s a great flavor combo poorly executed. The peanut butter flavor is too subtle, too restrained, while the fudge ripple is thick only on the pint top, too sparse, too thin, missing in action throughout the pint. A great flavor combination—peanut butter and chocolate—here instead creates only a “meh” contrast. The solution isn’t complicated: more peanut butter, more fudge, and this would be a winner. For $12 per pint via Goldbelly, you need to wow me a bit, and when you have peanut butter and chocolate as ingredients, it isn’t that hard to do. 6 of 10.
