Review

Bourbon Ice Cream: A creamy, smooth, rich base with a strong bourbon vibe that overwhelms any sweetness. The more I ate, the more I got used to the alcohol flavor—the bourbon really retreats into the background after the fourth spoonful or so. And I started to really appreciate the possibilities of an alcohol-flavored base to contrast against mix-ins or other flavors in a pint. The other thing I noticed: this base was very soft, requiring no tempering whatsoever before scooping. My spoon cut through the pint like it was on fire. Likely the effect of the sugars in the alcohol, preventing the base from truly hardening in the freezer.

Cornflake Cookies: Not whole cookies, more clumps and bits of cornflakes, with a very few large and medium-sized chunks towards the bottom of the pint. A bit soggy, especially the smaller bits, but with a great cornflake texture and taste—a nice contrast against the bourbon base. A few bigger chunks were even crispy, and more of those would’ve leveled this pint up for me.

Overall: Humphry Slocombe Secret Breakfast really sneaks up on you. Generally I’m not a huge fan of alcohol in ice cream. For me, an alcohol taste tends to overwhelm other flavors. Also, the sugar in the alcohol changes the texture of the ice cream, making it very soft, even straight from the freezer. But by the end of this pint, I wanted more—probably because the last few spoonfuls had the largest and crispiest cornflake cookie chunks. The smaller, soggier cookie bits that dominated the top of the pint just weren’t as delightful. More and larger, crispy cornflake cookie chunks would improve this pint—and justify it’s value when I’m buying from Goldbelly at $12 per pint. Still, it’s worth a taste. The cornflake cookies are a brilliant contrast against the powerful bourbon base. I can see why this flavor is one of Humphry Slocombe’s best sellers. It’s addictive stuff. 7/10.
