White Cake Ice Cream: There was a big air bubble in my pint, a manufacturing defect. This was disappointing, but it happens.
The texture of the base was quite gritty. I’m not sure what the source of the problem was, but I suspect either tiny crumbs from the cake pieces or ground seeds from the strawberry swirl. The grit was unpleasant and basically ruined this pint for me.
Ignoring the grit, the base was sweet with a good dairy flavor.
Yellow Cake Pieces: These were small- to medium-sized cake chunks, fairly sweet and blank, with no specific flavor. They were soft, not soggy, with a cake-like texture. There were a fair number of them—about ten pieces in my half of the pint.
Tart Strawberry Swirl: This was a mild, not tart, strawberry flavored swirl throughout the base. Despite being thin and scarce, it provided some strawberry flavor to the base. However, I wasn’t able to get much by itself on a spoon for a more concentrated taste of the strawberry flavor.
Overall: Little Debbie’s Strawberry Shortcake Roll was too gritty to be enjoyable.
The LD pint description reads: “White cake ice cream with yellow cake pieces and a tart strawberry swirl.”
The cake pieces weren’t bad, though there could have been more of them.
The strawberry swirl was thin, sparsely distributed, but flavorful nonetheless; more swirl would’ve improved this pint.
The base was sweet and had a fair amount of dairy flavor, but I couldn’t get past the grittiness of it. The gritty texture was so unpleasant on my tongue, it made the ice cream taste off or defective. I was simply not able to enjoy the ice cream at all due to the unnatural amount of grit in the base. I wasn’t able to determine the source of the grit. But it was a fatal flaw for me—one that I haven’t experienced with other Little Debbie flavors. Pass on this one. 4/10.
