Ice Cream Review Molly Moon's Berry Cobbler

Review

Pint Description from the Molly Moon’s Website: “Our Berry Cobbler ice cream is a beautiful example of all the love we put into our ice cream flavors. Each and every component of our ice cream is made in our neighborhood scoop shop kitchens, and this flavor is no exception.

For this flavor we use fresh organic cranberries from Plenty Farm in Grayland, WA as well as raspberries and blueberries we purchased and froze during the height of this past summer. These berries are turned into a dark perky jam. Meanwhile we bake trays of warm flaky buttery cream scones. The scones are broken into bite sized chunks, and we fold them and the jam into a vanilla ice cream flecked with vanilla beans.”

Vanilla Ice Cream/Berry Jam: This is a dense ice cream base that benefits from tempering. The jam is infused throughout the vanilla ice cream; so there’s really not much separation between the two and therefore, there’s no way to talk about them separately.

According to the pint description, the jam contains cranberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Small bits of fruit are obvious throughout. It’s sweet, fruity, and refreshing. You can’t really distinguish the flavor beyond a general “berry” flavor. Sometimes cranberry can be too bold, too tart, and overwhelm other berries, but it wasn’t a problem here.

The base texture itself is creamy and rich. It’s not icy even with all the added fruit.

Thicker swirls of jam might have resulted in a bolder jam flavor and a more discernible vanilla base flavor. Mixing the jam and vanilla base together so much has diluted the jam and vanilla flavors to a single flavor to some extent.

Buttery Cream Scones: These are big honking scone chunks, as you can see from the cross section pictures. The chunks are cubes at least an inch across on each side.
They are soft enough to bite into, but never soggy. They maintain that dry, solid texture of scones despite their time in this base—a nice trick.

They scones have a strong butter flavor. They are not very sweet. But that’s typical of a scone. I enjoy them—that bland but reassuring carb hug of a scone. The berry jam and the scones work really well together—a delightful combination.

My half pint serving contains four large scone chunks. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but because of their large size, I was more than satisfied with this mix-in ratio.

Overall: Molly Moon’s Berry Cobbler is a seasonal monthly flavor in November 2022. The base vanilla base might benefit from less mixing with the berry jam to keep the vanilla and berry flavors more separate and distinct. The huge scone chunks redeemed this pint, playing well against the berry jam and rich ice cream, making for an enjoyable winter pint. 8.5/10.
