“So we created a black sesame tahini ice cream giving you a deep nutty flavor with just a hint of bitterness, that amplifies the richness of our homemade deep dark fudge and the flecks of our freshly baked chocolate cookie crumbles! It’s a combination that’s as delicious as it is visually stunning. And even though this ice cream has a nutty flavor, it’s actually nut-free so everyone can enjoy!”
This was a March 2023 Women’s History Month flavor inspired by artist Natasha Marin. While it was a past seasonal flavor, Molly Moon sometimes brings those flavors back. So you may have a chance to try Black Powerful again in the future.
Black Sesame Tahini Ice Cream: The texture is rich, smooth, and creamy, and the taste is sweet. The aftertaste, however, is nutty, roasty, toasty, somewhat bitter, a nice contrast against the sweet base and mix-ins.
Dark Fudge: I could be wrong, but from my tasting and from the cross section pictures, it seems as if the fudge is from crumbled chocolate-covered cookies, not from a separate chocolate fudge mix-in. It’s nice, but if it were separated from the cookies—perhaps as separate chunks or swirls—it might be a stronger, more distinct flavor.
Chocolate Cookie Crumble Flecks: These are crumbles of fudge-covered chocolate cookies. There are ample crumbs in the base, but there’s also one huge ball of cookie crumbs in my serving, and a couple medium sized balls, and some smaller globs as well. The cookie crumbs taste like an Oreo—although I’m not certain what I’m tasting is truly that unique, earthy flavor of black cocoa.
Overall: An enjoyable, unique pint that balances sweet and bitter notes. The generous cookie crumbs almost make it into a cookies-and-cream flavor. But then the bitter, nutty aftertaste of the base reins that in, making for a more complex and savory pint, an adult cookies-and-cream, if you will. Recommended (if it’s ever in stock again).
