Crème Fraiche Ice Cream and Blackberry Jam: The ice cream base and jam swirl are thoroughly mixed together. There’s no point in reviewing them separately as they are not separate in the pint or on the spoon.
And, for those unfamiliar—I was—crème fraîche is simply a richer version of sour cream. There are minor differences between the two: crème fraîche has more butter fat than sour cream, and it’s a bit tangier.
Even though the base and jam swirl are almost uniformly mixed, I can still taste tanginess in the base. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s there in the background—a refreshing flavor note that I appreciate.
The blackberry jam is fruity, but it’s not super strong either because it’s spread thin by the base. I would have preferred thicker swirls of the jam to provide a big burst of fruit flavor.
The texture is thick and creamy. You might want to let it temper a few minutes to help accentuate the flavors.
It’s not icy from the blackberry jam; this is sometimes a problem with fruit-based ice creams. There are some small, gritty blackberry seeds in the base, but they weren’t offensive.
Overall: This is another December 2022 seasonal flavor. I enjoyed the creme fraiche base as the tanginess was something that was a little different—innovative–and the berry jam balanced out the flavor well, providing some sweetness against the tart. It’s a light, refreshing and enjoyable combination. But adding a mix-in—pie crust pieces, chocolate chips, big scone chunks like in Molly Moon’s Berry Cobbler—would’ve elevated this flavor.
