Malty Pretzel Infused Ice Cream: A malty, rich, and creamy base without much pretzel flavor. I found a few small pretzel crumbs in the base, but they were no longer crunchy. They weren’t big enough to really taste on their own, and their soak in the base didn’t seem to add the expected flavor punch. The base was sweet, not salty, and other than malt, it lacked a strong or distinctive pretzel flavor.
Vanilla Bean Caramel Swirls: I didn’t see anything that looked like a caramel swirl. The cross section pictures suggest it was missing. I did get one “caramel pretzel cluster”: a hard caramel coating holding together smaller pieces of pretzels in a big cluster. Maybe that’s what the caramel was supposed to be. But I doubt it. I think the caramel dissolved into the base here. Caramel is one of those troublesome mix-ins that dissolves far too easily into the base if it’s not handled properly—pre-chilled, added abundantly to the base, and quickly frozen. So I’m marking the caramel swirl as a fail.
Chocolate Covered Pretzels: These were clusters of pretzel pieces held together by a hard, chocolate shell. They had a mild chocolate flavor overpowered by the salty pretzel pieces. The clusters were very crunchy and added significant texture. The chocolate coating helped preserve the pretzels’ flavor and texture. They were medium to large-sized, and there were a moderate amount of them. This was a solid mix-in that worked well.
Overall: Molly Moon’s Caramel Pretzel Crunch was a seasonal flavor for December 2022. The base seemed bland, lacking the promised pretzel flavor. The chocolate pretzel clusters were crunchy fun. But the caramel swirl had, for the most part, entirely dissolved into the base. Not terrible, but below expectations. 7/10.
