Pint Description: from Molly Moon’s website: “Our chefs and ice cream makers are turning tart and juicy apples from Collins Family Orchards into an annual fall favorite at Molly Moon’s—Dutch Apple Pie ice cream. We make a rich apple pie filling by cooking the apples in butter, fragrant with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and swirl it into freshly churned sweet cream to make our spiced apple ice cream. And no Dutch apple pie would be complete without a crisp crumble! We make ours with organic flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a dash of cardamom, and then bake it until golden brown to make this ice cream irresistible.”
Spiced Apple Ice Cream: The base truly tasted like apple pie filling—strong apple notes followed by the warm spices typical of apple pie. It was less creamy and less sweet than expected, perhaps from all the fruit in this pint. Fruit can make ice cream icy, but that wasn’t a problem here. Regardless, the base texture was pleasant, just not as rich and decadent as some other luxury brands.
Crisp Crumble: Small pieces of hard oatmeal crumble throughout the pint. Oaty, somewhat salty—nice contrasts against the base. Very crunchy, adding some texture. Mostly smaller pieces, though I did get few larger ones. Every spoonful had some crisp crumble—an ideal mix-in ratio.
Overall: Molly Moon’s Dutch Apple Pie deftly captures that apple pie thing, largely because of its powerful spiced apple base. The crumbles were good too, but being greedy, I wanted more of those. It was a seasonal monthly pint in November 2022, and I enjoyed it so much I will be keeping an eye out for it around Turkey Day 2023. It does look Molly Moon’s offers this flavor every year, so if you didn’t grab it this year, just bide your time. 8.5/10.
