Proper Ice Cream Vanilla Malt with Roasted White Chocolate

Review

Disclaimer: Proper Ice Cream sent me a complimentary box of six pints to review. Thanks, Proper! While the free pints provide me with the opportunity for this review, Proper Ice Cream has no control over the opinions expressed in my review.

The pints reviewed are available from Goldbelly.

Flavor Description: Vanilla Malt with Roasted White Chocolate is made with Madagascar Vanilla and old-fashioned malt and mixed with roasted Valrhona white chocolate.

Vanilla Malt Base: Creamy and sweet, with a moderate vanilla and malt flavor. I must admit that I love malt in my ice cream so this was a delicious flavor combination for me. As I note in other Proper pint reviews, the base texture is not as fatty as some other brands. This may help elevate the mix-ins, making it easier to taste them against the base. The base on this one seemed to melt quickly, so eat fast.

Roasted Valrhona White Chocolate: These are white chocolate chunks of irregular size and shape, quite generous in amount. In my serving there is one brownish, roasted white chocolate chunk, but the rest are lighter in color. The darker chunk has a distinctive roasted flavor, both savory and sweet. The white chocolate is pretty hard at first, but melts in my mouth, and that is when I can really taste it.

Overall: Proper Ice Cream’s Vanilla Malt with Roasted White Chocolate is one of the better pints I tried from this brand. The vanilla malt base and roasted white chocolate mix-ins are premium quality. It’s a very sweet flavor combination, but I love malted flavors so much that I had no complaints. It helped that my half of the pint was absolutely loaded with gnarled, roasted white chocolate chunks, many of them biggie-sized. One note: some white chocolate chunks were browner and more roasted than others. I liked that roasty-toasty flavor against the vanilla malt sweetness and wanted more of it. Recommended for the malt-heads. You know who you are. 8/10.

Back blurb

As many artisan crafts begin, Proper Ice Cream started in our home kitchen. Many trips to Italy and “foodie” cities such as New York, San Francisco and Chicago left us missing such amazing textures and flavors until our next visit. Experimenting with trying to recreate these experiences was all it took.

There is real science to crafting an ultra creamy ice cream that uses entirely natural ingredients, and we’ve cracked it. We even use 20% less sugars than standard recipes!
Less sugar and zero additives results in custard-like mouthfeel that doesn’t require a drink of water afterward.

It’s simply proper, the way it should be.
