Review
Spiced Honey Banana Base: This ice cream has a too mild banana flavored base, with little or no honey or spices. Premium texture, rich, creamy, but lacking in flavor. Bland.
Marionberry Jam: Two ginormous dollops of marionberry jam top the pint. But tread carefully! That’s all the jam you are going to get from this one! Beneath the top layer, there are only faint jam swirls in the pint itself. So just mix a taste of jam from the top in with each spoonful and it will last throughout the pint. The jam is delicious with a strong, distinctive flavor—sweet, fruity with a hint of spice. Fruit mix-ins in ice cream risk being icy unless their water content is dealt with—boiled away or bound to sugar of fat. Happily, this jam is smooth, soft and pliable, not icy.
Peanut Butter White Chocolate Stracciatella: Described by S&S as “peanut butter melted into white chocolate.” Other than the large chunk in the middle of the pint, most of this mix-in amounted to a few small flakes. A rather stingy mix-in level. The pieces have a ganache-like texture and melt quickly in the mouth. The flavor is sweet peanut butter—an effective contrast against the two fruit flavors in the pint. But, in the end, a missed opportunity, because there simply wasn’t enough of this mix-in in the pint.
Overall: Salt & Straw’s Hunk-a Chunka PB&B had a promising flavor combination—banana, peanut butter, white chocolate, and marionberry jam. But only the jam delivered thrills—and that was limited to the top layer. There was little or no jam beneath the top layer. The spiced honey banana base, while rich and creamy, was far too bland, lacking the punch of banana I expected, let alone a taste of honey or spice. And the white chocolate peanut butter flakes were few in number, depriving the pint of a texture and flavor that it needed. Disappointing after the great Chocolate Caramel Potato Chip Cupcake flavor. Still love you S&S, but nope on this one. 6/10.
