Chocolate and Vanilla Base: Rich and creamy chocolate and vanilla bases swirled together. A mild milk chocolate against a mild vanilla. The vanilla is so mild it dilutes the chocolate flavor. Still, it’s enjoyable enough, a fun combination of bases, certainly premium quality. But a flavor other than vanilla would have added another dimension to contrast with the chocolate.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough: B&J’s standard chocolate chip cookie dough chunks. They range from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch in diameter. Tiny chocolate chip pieces are embedded in the dough, a few in every chunk. The cookie dough flavor and texture plays well with the chocolate base—the two together on a spoon are fantastic. And there’s a fair amount spread throughout the pint—20 chunks or more. Not enough to appear on every spoonful, but they are a plentiful mix-in. It’s always easy to find yet another cookie dough chunk when you dig for one.
Brownie Batter Swirl: Fairly thin swirls of brownie batter, so thin they sometimes don’t stand out enough against the chocolate base. When detectable, the brownie batter adds a darker chocolate note, a richer, stronger chocolate flavor, quite different from the chocolate base. The brownie batter is addictive, but not nearly as common as the cookie dough chunks. We were left wanting more. More of the brownie batter and in thicker gobs would help to level up this pint.
Overall: B&J’s Totally Unbaked has delightful mix-ins, but is undercut by a lack of brownie batter and an overly mild base. The mixture of chocolate and vanilla bases is somewhat boring because both are quite mild. The vanilla does little more than dilute the chocolate. When we found a big gob of cookie dough or brownie batter on our spoon with the pure chocolate base, it was delicious. But finding that brownie batter was more difficult than it should’ve been.
