Black Cherry Base: As always, Graeter’s provides a reliably premium ice cream base—here a sweet, rich, smooth, creamy, fruity, refreshing cherry-flavored base.
Black Cherry Bits: These are tiny bits of dark cherries—maybe each is a quarter or even an eighth of a cherry. The risk with incorporating any fruit in ice cream is that it will end up icy and therefore hard, crunchy, and flavorless—diluting the flavor and texture of the pint. Graeter’s dodges that bullet. These cherries aren’t at all icy. Perhaps sugared or candied or cooked to prevent ice from forming. The cherry bits add flavor and some mild texture. But there are only a moderate amount of them well-distributed throughout the pint. Larger cherry chunks—and more of them—might have improved this pint.
Chocolate Chips: You know the drill: these are the standard Graeter’s random chocolate chips—randomly sized, shaped, and distributed. It’s a quality semi-sweet chocolate with a faint bitterness that always contrasts well against any sweet base, and it certainly works against this cherry base. It’s a particular pleasure of any Graeter’s pint to stumble upon a gigantic chocolate chip and just let it melt in your mouth. It keeps us trying all their different pint flavors, even when their pints are just basic, classic flavors. And there were two or three biggies in this pint—chocolate chunks that we savored for a long time. But it just seemed that there wasn’t as much chocolate in this pint as in some other Graeter’s pints that we’ve lucked upon before. So we didn’t get that same winning gambler’s high from this particular pint. Quality control to ensure a generous amount of chocolate in every pint might be needed.
Overall: Graeter’s Black Cherry Chocolate Chip is a solid and very enjoyable premium pint. But ours was somewhat lacking in the chocolate chip department—a likely quality control issue. More of those crazy random chocolate chunks (lets’s face it: at their best, they ain’t chips) would’ve made for a perfect pint. And before we sign off, let’s broach the elephant in the room: this flavor reminds us of Cherry Garcia, which we haven’t scooped recently enough to compare fairly against this Graeter’s flavor. So: we will be purchasing this pint again soon for a blind taste test against Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia to determine which is the superior cherry and chocolate pint. Stay tuned.
