Review

Base: Straight from the freezer, the ice cream base is dense and stringy. Exactly as Acme Valley claims on the pint—without tempering it’s like taffy. It clings stubbornly to the spoon, resisting scooping from pint to bowl. A frustrating process to scoop if you don’t let it temper.

The inner pint plastic cover advises to temper the pint for 10-15 minutes. It really improves the ability to scoop the ice cream—and, for that matter, to taste its rich flavor.

Even after tempering, the base texture is still dense, luxurious, decadent. It’s frankly the highest quality base I’ve ever tasted. Acme Valley uses no added air in its ice cream. This creates a one-of-a-kind, ultra-premium base–worth tasting to experience the difference it makes.

You can tell the ice cream is different from the calorie count as well: 490 calories per 2/3 cup serving, 1290 calories per pint.

This base did have a rather sweet praline flavor, almost a bite of butterscotch in the background. Rich and flavorful.

Praline Pecan Pieces: A moderate amount of small to medium-sized pecan pieces were well distributed throughout the pint. Each chopped into the size of a quarter of a pecan or smaller. I didn’t get pecans in every spoonful, maybe every other. A few more pecans would improve this pint just a bit. Still, the pecans I tasted were flavorful.

Overall: Acme Valley Butter Pecan is a well-executed classic flavor. The base is top tier–after a good 10 minute tempering, it’s among the best I’ve ever tasted. Their careful, air-free ice cream making process delivers a dense, creamy, decadent base that’s immediately distinctive. In a blindfolded taste test, you could recognize Acme Valley against any of the familiar premium brands—it’s richer, denser, in many ways superior to any competitor out there. Yes, yes, this butter pecan pint could have had a few more praline pecan pieces. But a basic flavor executed well is all I ask, and this pint delivered. That said, I do wish Acme Valley would try its hand at a few more innovative flavors. That’s probably necessary to compete and survive on store shelves in the current crowded, cutthroat premium ice cream market. But when I’m in an old school, butter pecan mood, Acme Valley is the brand I will be reaching for. Recommended as a classic worth another taste. 7/10.
