Pint Description from Acme Valley Website: Despite the fact that we make this the old fashioned way, this isn’t your same old Chocolate Chip. Our full-strength Chocolate Chip starts with our handcrafted liquid chocolate, delicately drizzled into a drum of frozen ice cream. The cold causes the chocolate ribbon to shatter into bite-sized bits, and the result is a crunchy classic.

Sweet Cream Base: This is a typical dense Acme Valley base. They use a unique process that adds no air to the base. Acme Valley calls the texture stretchy and compares it to taffy, and that’s no lie. A temper of 10 or 15 minutes is absolutely necessary to appreciate the rich flavor that this ice cream has to offer.

Once it tempers, the base is smooth and creamy. It has a clean, sweet dairy flavor that is quite pleasant—a premium base, the perfect, simple blank canvas for any mix-in.

Chocolate Chips: These are mostly thin, crispy flakes spread throughout the base in a stracciatella-style. Mostly it’s small flakes, but there are some medium-sized ones as well.

There’s plenty of chocolate on every spoonful. It’s semisweet chocolate with just a hint of bitterness to it. A good quality chocolate better than some of the ganache-style chocolate chips from other premium brands. The chocolate will melt in your mouth if you let it, but I prefer crunching on that stracciatella-style chocolate.

Overall: Acme Valley’s Chocolate Chip is an enjoyable, classic ice cream flavor. The sweet cream base is high quality and refreshing. But it’s the plentiful, crunchy stracciatella chocolate chips that make this a recommended flavor. Grab a pint if you happen to see it on the store shelf. It’s worth a taste (after it tempers).

Score: 8.5
