Ice Cream Review Acme Valley Chocolate Peanut Butter

Review

Disclaimer: Acme Valley sent me a complimentary box of 10 ice cream pints to review. Thanks, Acme Valley! While the free pints provide me with the opportunity for this review, Acme Valley has no control over the opinions expressed.

Chocolate Peanut Butter is a new flavor from Acme Valley—so new that, as I write this review, there isn’t even a page for the flavor on the Acme Valley website.

My new practice has been to start a review with the brand’s pint description. It helps set expectations. But this pint had no description on the pint—and as I mentioned, there’s no webpage yet. So, without further ado:

Chocolate Base: As you can see from the cross section pictures, there is a large air bubble on one side of the pint—a little disappointing, but these manufacturing defects happen to the best of brands as they scale up or add new flavors. And, as I mentioned, this flavor is new.

As with all Acme Valley ice creams, the recommendation is to let it temper for 10 – 15 minutes. The longer, the better, in my experience.

The reason: this is a very dense base. Even after tempering, expect it to still be thick. Acme Valley calls it stretchy, taffy-like, which I can see.

The ice cream science of it is that they add no air to the base. Cheaper ice cream is full of air, and air lacks flavor.

Acme Valley is the only one making ice cream this way that I’ve encountered, so expect a unique experience.

This base has a sweet, powerfully rich chocolate flavor. The ingredients include several types of chocolate—high fat cocoa processed with alkali, cacao, and semisweet chocolate. So it’s hitting chocolate notes from several different angles, obtaining a unique, concentrated chocolate flavor that is fairly delightful. An enjoyable chocolate ice cream regardless of the mix-ins.

Peanut Butter Chunks: There are chunks of peanut butter mixed in throughout the base—mostly small pieces, but I also got a few larger chunks.

They start out hard, but melt in your mouth quickly to a typical peanut butter texture. The chunks taste like peanut butter, not overly sweet, but maybe somewhat salty, or maybe the normal saltiness just stood out against the sweet chocolate base. Either way, the peanut butter is a nice contrast to the chocolate base.

Sadly, though, there just isn’t much peanut butter in my pint, not enough to stand up against the powerful chocolate base. Just look at the cross section pictures. Not much there. More peanut butter chunks would improve this pint significantly.

Overall: Chocolate and Peanut Butter is a classic combination. The combo works well in this pint, especially with the punchy chocolate base. But the peanut butter mix-in to base ratio needs to be increased to balance the flavors and meet the generous mix-in standards of today’s premium pints.
