Ice Cream Review Acme Valley Mint Chip 8.5/10

Review

Disclaimer: Acme Valley sent me a complimentary box of 10 ice cream pints to review. Thanks, Acme Valley! While the free pints provide me the opportunity for this review, Acme Valley has no control over the opinions expressed.

Description from the Acme Valley Website: “A Breath of Fresh Airlessness — This one’s a cool character, and classic for a reason. Our full-strength Mint Chip ice cream is a double-chilled dose of freshness with a ribbon of premium chocolate running right through all of it. If you want refreshment that packs a punch, reach for this one.”

Mint Ice Cream Base: Acme Valley recommends tempering their pints 10 – 15 minutes. It’s a solid recommendation if you want the best taste. That’s true because Acme Valley ice cream has a dense “stretchy” texture that concentrates flavor—but you can only appreciate that depth of flavor after tempering. Eat it too soon, straight from the freezer, and you will miss out.

The flavor of this base is moderately sweet and minty, with a nice dairy finishing note. The texture, after tempering, is rich and creamy. Above all, refreshing.

Chocolate Chips: As with all Acme Valley chip ice creams—Chocolate Chip, Raspberry Chip—this is stracciatella-style chocolate. Stracciatella means “little shred” in Italian—and that’s what the chips are—thin, crispy shreds of chocolate.

Ice cream makers produce stracciatella by drizzling melted chocolate into the ice cream base towards the end of the churning process. The chocolate solidifies upon contact with the cold ice cream, and is then broken up with a spatula.

Acme Valley uses a bittersweet chocolate that’s delicious. It will melt in your mouth if you can resist the urge to crunch on all those chocolate flakes. I can’t. I’m a confirmed chocolate flake cruncher.

As with their other chip flavors, Acme Valley is very generous with the chocolate mix-in ratio, as you can see from the top down and cross section pictures. Many of my spoonfuls are overflowing with chocolate flakes, which I frankly love.

Every chip flavor from Acme Valley is a winner. They would do well to emulate the same mix-in amount in their other flavors—an easy win across their entire product line.

Overall: Mint (Chocolate) Chip is another classic flawlessly executed by Acme Valley. Some might long for something more exotic or novel, but when a classic is this good, I have no complaints. It’s a simple recipe: a premium, mild mint base and plentiful crispy chocolate flakes. And it’s simply delicious. Recommended.

Score: 9/10
