Disclaimer: Atomic Creamery sent me a free box of six pints to review. This is in part to promote their monthly ice cream subscription box. While the free pints provide us the opportunity for this review, Atomic Creamery has no control over the opinions contained in this review.
How the Atomic Creamery Subscription Box Works: Subscribers choose four pints each month—two pints from a menu of rotating, limited edition pints available only to subscribers that month, and two pints from Atomic Creamery’s regular menu. Buckeye is a flavor from Atomic Creamery’s regular menu, meaning it is available for purchase year-round. Subscribe to the Atomic Creamery Subscription box here.
Buckeye Pint Description from Atomic Creamery’s website: Dairy Base, Peanut butter, Reeses Pieces, Crushed Reeses Cups topped with Ganache. “A world where only peanut butter exists.”
Peanut Butter Base: A rich, creamy, dense base with a buttery mouthfeel (after a solid 15 minute temper). Some brands dial the peanut butter flavor way down, concerned that adding too much peanut butter will change the fat ratio of the base, negatively impacting the ice cream’s texture. This timid approach results in a very mild peanut butter flavor. But it’s not an issue with Atomic Creamery’s Buckeye pint. The right amount of peanut butter was used resulting in a bold, sweet peanut butter flavor. Well done, Atomic.
Reese’s Candy Mix-ins: A very few mini Reese’s Pieces were mixed throughout and on top, adding crunch and another peanut butter note. Occasionally the shell of the Reese’s Pieces melted into the base somewhat, making the candy softer, less crunchy. Also, there were crushed Reese’s peanut butter cups mixed throughout; mostly small to medium-sized, but I did get a large chunk almost an inch across. A good amount of peanut butter cups, much more common than the Reese’s pieces, with some chunks on most every spoon.
Chocolate Ganache: Typical ganache, sweet milk chocolate flavor, with a magic shell texture. It melts quickly in the mouth. What was surprising—the pint had a ganache on top and bottom. The top ganache was thin with some mini Reese’s pieces in the center. The bottom ganache was thicker, chunkier, plentiful. A delightful surprise as you near the end of the pint. You could really dig up big ol’ hunks of it.
Overall: Atomic Creamery’s Buckeye is peanut butter and chocolate heaven. The base is a sweet, creamy, bold peanut butter. So many brands pull their punches with a peanut butter base. Not Atomic. Their peanut butter bases stands strong against the chocolate mix-ins. The mix-ins include Reese’s pieces, crushed Reese’s peanut butter cups, and milk chocolate ganache. The amount of mix-ins is generous, plenty in every single spoonful. I guess someone could say this is almost too much, too rich, but that’s not me. I want bold flavors and generous mix-ins. If you are looking for a decadent peanut butter and chocolate pint, this one is recommended. 9/10.
