Disclaimer: Atomic Creamery sent me a free box of six pints to review. This is in part to promote their monthly ice cream subscription box. While the free pints provide us the opportunity for this review, Atomic Creamery has no control over the opinions contained in this review.

How the Atomic Creamery Subscription Box Works: Subscribers choose four pints each month—two pints from a menu of rotating, limited edition pints available only to subscribers that month, and two pints from Atomic Creamery’s regular menu. Halvah is a flavor from Atomic Creamery’s regular menu, meaning it is available for purchase year-round. Subscribe to the Atomic Creamery Subscription box here.

Pint Description from Atomic Creamery’s website: Dairy Base, Halvah, Turkish Pistachios. “A sesame-based and MIDDLE EAST-found bit of pure sweetness.”

Dairy Base: Creamy and rich. Premium texture when allowed to temper for at least 15 minutes. Only mildly sweet. A slight sesame seed flavor from the halvah inclusion, which is pleasant, unique.

Halvah: As you can see from the cross-section pictures, the halvah has entirely dissolved into the base. The halvah adds a subtle but distinctive flavor to the base, but no noticeable texture.

Turkish Pistachios: A generous amount of chopped pistachios well-distributed throughout the pint. Some on every spoon. A variety of sizes—from tiny bits to whole pistachios. Crunchy. Often a tad bitter. An effective contrast against the base. A solid mix-in, adding texture and flavor to the pint.

Overall: Atomic Creamery’s Halvah is unique. I’ve never encountered a halvah-flavored ice cream before. Halvah is a Middle Eastern candy—a dry, crunchy sesame paste bar. I had a friend in college who bought halvah every week–so there are fans obsessed with this candy. I was expecting crunchy pieces of halvah in the base, but nope. The halvah completely dissolved into the rich, creamy, premium base, adding subtle, interesting flavor but no texture. The plentiful, sometimes bitter, chopped Turkish pistachios are a delicious mix-in, a great contrast against the smooth, mild base.

The combination of halvah base and pistachios results in an enjoyable if not particularly exciting pint–the halvah is just too subtle for me. If you are a halvah fan, however, you have found your favorite pint. 7/10.
