How the Atomic Creamery Subscription Box Works: Red Velvet Cheesecake is a limited edition flavor included in the February 2022 subscription box. How does the Atomic Creamery subscription box work? Subscribers choose four pints each month—two pints from a menu of rotating, limited edition pints available only to subscribers that month, and two pints from Atomic Creamery’s regular menu.

Cheesecake Ice Cream Base: The base was frozen solid, too solid to scoop in fact. As the packaging suggests, you must temper this ice cream for at least 10 – 15 minutes. For me, it became soft enough to eat after about 20 minutes. The cheesecake base had a pronounced tangy cream cheese flavor that I enjoyed. It was a clean, refreshing taste, but somewhat thin, reminding me of the mouthfeel of ice milk. No buttery or fatty mouthfeel, unlike many other premium brands. The pint package lacked an ingredient list or nutrition panel—so I’m not certain of the specific ingredients of this pint or the percentage of fat. But according to Atomic Creamery, their ice cream has a high milk fat content, and they use liquid nitrogen to make their ice cream. This allows them to make their ice cream much more quickly than competitors while adding less air. They say the reduced air creates a creamier base, but I wouldn’t describe it as creamy. It does have a distinctive texture and taste, but it doesn’t remind me of the rich air-free texture of Acme Valley for example.

Cake Pops Mix-In: There were several whole cake pops in the pint—red velvet cake pops coated with a pink ganache and sprinkles. Also throughout the pint were chunks of cake pops and separate slivers of pink ganache. The cake was soft, not soggy, with that texture and flavor characteristic of red velvet cake. The ganache was sweet, but I couldn’t discern any other flavor to it. The cake pop balls ranged from 1 – 2 inches in diameter. They were great fun to scoop out and eat whole. There were enough mix-ins in the base that most every taste had some ganache shell or cake.

Overall: Atomic Creamery’s Red Velvet Cheesecake is a great Valentine’s Day treat. The base has the thin mouthfeel of ice milk, perhaps because this ice cream is made quickly—flash frozen using liquid nitrogen. I haven’t tasted any other ice cream made using liquid nitrogen, so I lack a frame of reference. I don’t know if this base is typical. I’ll know more as I sample the other five pints I have to review. The cake pop mix-ins are first rate—soft and cakey inside, crunchy with sweet ganache and sprinkles outside. And the slivers of ganache throughout the pint add some crunchy texture and sweet flavor. How could this pint be improved? By adding more cake pops and tweaking the base to obtain a more traditional buttery mouthfeel. But I liked this Valentine’s themed pint nonetheless. 7/10.
