Ganache: The ganache is soft, easy to spoon, and sweet as hell; reminiscent of chocolate shell topping, but softer, not brittle, and addictive.

Truffles: The truffles are also soft and have a nice hint of caramel. As you can see from the open pint top photo, there are only a total of seven caramel truffles, and each is somewhat tiny. I’m fine with the size of the truffles, but B&J could be a little more generous with the number of them. These truffles are only on the top, not distributed throughout the pint. So what you see upon opening is all the truffles you will get from this pint.

Cookie dough: The standard B&J cookie dough plays extremely well with the rich milk chocolate base. I found cookie dough in most spoonfuls. But a few more cookie dough chunks would’ve improved this pint. When the base and dough come together on a spoon, all I want is another spoonful of that.

Caramel swirl: The one taste of caramel swirl was pleasant, rich. There is sometimes a problem with thin caramel where it melts and mixes into the base, disappearing; a thicker caramel might have been more apparent. The caramel also has to compete with the base flavor, and against a chocolate base a caramel swirl if not bold enough can get lost. If there was more than one caramel swirl in the base itself, I couldn’t taste it.

Overall: A good not great pint, hobbled by the number of mix-ins and the caramel swirl getting lost in the base. Learn from my mistake: don’t eat all the ganache and truffle topping at once. Instead, ration the topping out judiciously throughout the entire pint. Then when there is no cookie dough, you can mix ganache or truffles with a spoonful of base and remain in mix-in heaven. I don’t imagine myself buying this flavor again. Still, I’m looking forward to trying all the other pints in the B&J Topped lineup, and I appreciate B&J’s creativity entering the layered pint space that Magnum, Häagen-Dazs, and Talenti have been exploring.
