Pint Description: Lemon-zested strawberries ‘n panna ice cream, strawberry rhubarb swirl.
Lemon-Zested Strawberries: The base is pink. It has a mild lemon scent. The flavor is tart and lemony, tempered with some sweet fruitiness from the strawberries. A summery, refreshing flavor. The texture seems somewhat light, not as dense and creamy as other non-fruit Caffe Panna pints.
Strawberry Rhubarb Swirl: The strawberry rhubarb swirl provides a big burst of fruit flavor. It’s tart, but again the strawberry helps balance out the flavor with some sweetness. It has a jam-like texture. One large pool of swirl is icy, but melts quickly on my tongue. Ice is always a risk with any fruit based mix-in; but this problem was otherwise avoided throughout the pint. One thing to note: there’s no continuous swirl running through my portion. Instead, my half pint serving has three quarter-sized pools or dollops of the jam swirl.
Overall: Caffe Panna Signs of Spring is a refreshing, sweet-tart treat, a solid springtime, or in my case with an overstocked freezer, summertime treat. The lemon-strawberry base is somewhat lighter than other Caffe Panna pints I’ve tasted, but still premium quality. The strawberry works well to balance out the tart flavors. The strawberry rhubarb swirl was icy in one spot, but was otherwise well executed. The base and mix-in are very similar in flavor—tart offset by sweet strawberry.
So the pint is somewhat of a one-note flavor. Not bad, in fact, exactly right if you’re in the mood for fruity sweet-tart flavors. However, it might be a more interesting pint to me if other textures or flavors were included—for example, pie crust pieces, cake chunks, cookie pieces, etc. If you’re looking for a lighter, less decadent Caffe Panna pint, this is a solid choice. 7.5/10
