Mascarpone Ice Cream: The base is sweet, rich, and creamy. It’s somewhat tangy from the included mascarpone. It’s purple-colored to support the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, not to add any flavor however. It’s a high quality base with a distinctive, cream cheese tang. The mascarpone is a nice change from the standard sweet cream.
Chocolate Chips: You know what’s up: Graeter’s has good chocolate chips—somewhere between bittersweet and dark chocolate. Enough bitterness to contrast against the sweet base. There is a mix of different sizes, more smaller flakes and a few medium to large chunks. A moderate amount. The amount and size of chocolate chips is always a bit random from Graeter’s because the pints are made and packed by hand, not factory made. But in this pint there is enough chocolate chip mix-ins to not feel short-changed. A pretty large chunk towards the bottom of the pint is especially fun to dig out and eat.
Oreo Cookies: And you know what Oreo chunks are. Most of these chunks are somewhat soft, not soggy, but some larger pieces still have a good crunch to them. Crumbs are mixed in throughout the base. A few large cookie chunks, mostly medium or small though. Disappointed in the amount—less than the amount of chocolate chips.
Overall: Graeter’s Boldly Bearcat was a limited edition flavor that recognizes the University of Cincinnati, but it now appears to be on Graeter’s permanent menu. The mascarpone base is great—rich, creamy, tangy, flavorful, but not overpowering. The chocolate chips and Oreo chunks are a great one-two punch mix-in combo. But my particular pint was a bit light on chocolate chips and Oreo chunks. Every Graeter’s pint is something of a lottery ticket in regards to the amount of chocolate chips mix-ins—some are absolutely loaded for bear, others a tad light. My pint was somewhere in between. This is the randomness that comes from hand-packed pints. Good, enjoyable, recommended. But could’ve been great with more generous mix-ins. 8/10.
