Ice Cream Review Graeter's Buckey Blitz

Review

Chocolate And Peanut Butter Ice Cream: Rich, smooth, creamy, mildly sweet. An unusual base combination of both chocolate AND peanut butter in a single base—not a swirl, but those two flavors mixed together to a single uniform flavor. Unfortunately, the peanut butter flavor is subtle—too subtle. After the first few bites, I taste only chocolate. Maybe a swirl would work better here so you could taste the two separate flavors clearly.

Peanut Butter Cookie Dough: Small, round pellets of peanut butter cookie dough, roughly 1/4 inch around. Hard enough not to melt in your mouth, but soft enough to chew easily despite being frozen. Yes, they have that satisfying texture of cookie dough. Once again, the peanut butter flavor is subtle, and not too sweet. Only a moderate amount of cookie dough in the pint, unfortunately, as you can see from the cross section pictures. Generous is better with most mix-ins—and absolutely necessary, and in fairness, expected, when you are selling a premium ice cream like Graeter’s for $10 per pint or more.

Chocolate Chips: Graeter’s chocolate chips, which are really chunks, not uniform chips. Random-sized chunks. Random-shaped chunks. I love them—that is, when they’re generously distributed in a pint. I cry out to an unjust deity when the mix-in level is less than generous. They melt in your mouth, these chocolate chunks—or they will if you have the willpower not to gobble them down like a fiend. The darker or more bittersweet chocolate chunks in this pint contrast nicely against the milk chocolate base.

There is only a moderate amount of chocolate in this pint though. I put the spoon down. I return the pint to the freezer. I stand outside and stare at a cloud. I make passionate entreaties to the omniscient entity controlling this life. There is no response. The cloud drifts by. A bird alights on nearby tree. He is oblivious to me.

Sometimes there is injustice in this world, and nothing can be done about it. I consult the pint again. Still not a lot of chocolate.

I would have enjoyed some more chocolate chunks, that’s all I’m saying.

Overall: Graeter’s Buckeye Blitz sounds like a flavor I would love love love—chocolate and peanut butter ice cream base, peanut butter cookie dough, and those wild and crazy Graeter’s chocolate chunks. It’s one of my favorite flavor combos—peanut butter and chocolate. The base stands out as rich and creamy and chocolatey, though the peanut butter flavor was more subtle, too subtle really to taste against the chocolate after the first bite or so. Keep in mind that this base is not a swirl of chocolate and peanut butter, but the two flavors mixed together into a single uniform base.

Another problem: there could have been more mix-ins. The chocolate chunks are a nice contrast against the base, if not generous in amount. The peanut butter cookie dough is fine also, although the chunks/pellets are somewhat small in size, and once again not generously distributed in this particular pint.

Still, it’s an enjoyable pint and the mix-ins work well together. It could’ve been a 10/10 with the proper, generous amount of mix-ins, and perhaps a swirled base of two separate flavors, chocolate and peanut butter. Recommended when in the mood to consider wistfully all those wonderful things in this world that might have been. 8/10.
