Salted Caramel And Light Coffee Ice Cream: Creamy, rich, and sweet, with more coffee than caramel flavor. As with many coffee ice creams, the coffee flavor is intense at first, but fades into a general sweetness over time. Admittedly, it may be too intense for some coffee haters out there. I love my morning coffee, so this was a fine base in my opinion.
Caramel Truffles: Small milk chocolate truffles, 1/4 inch per side, with a liquid caramel center. The chocolate melts in my mouth finishing with a burst of decidedly salty caramel. Many brands pull their punches with salty flavors, but Graeter’s dialed the salt in just right on these. Sadly, my half of the pint contains only four full caramel truffles. Yes, there are broken truffle pieces in the pint, but not many. Mix-in ratio is disappointing.
Toffee Pieces: The Heath toffee pieces have largely melted into the base. In my half of the pint, only two small toffee bits have any crunch. I do enjoy the sweet gobs of melted toffee, but more of the solid, crunchy toffee bits would’ve added some texture to the pint. Again, disappointed by the mix-in ratio on this one. For $10 per pint, you can afford to throw in plenty of toffee bits. I paid the entry fee—put on a decadent show that I will tell my friends about.
Overall: Graeter’s Caramel Macchiato is a creative flavor from a brand that mostly does classic, old school flavors. I was frankly surprised to find this flavor on their website. It has the elements of a decadent pint: coffee and caramel base; milk chocolate caramel truffles; and toffee bits. Reading the pint description, I was ready to be wowed. The base is Graeter’s standard high quality—rich, sweet, and creamy, a good canvas for the mix-ins.
I typically love how a coffee base plays against chocolate, and this strong and sweet coffee base impressed me. Coffee is one of those flavors that can stand up to chocolate and even enhance it, and it did the job well here. The caramel truffles are fun, and their distinctly salty caramel centers are a nice contrast to the base. But there just aren’t enough truffles in my half of the pint—only four. Yes, there are a few truffle bits throughout the pint as well, but very few. The toffee bits are scarce too, and have mostly melted into the base.
I love those sweet globs of melted toffee, but give me the texture of lots of crunchy Heath bits too. This flavor could’ve been great, a new favorite for me, if the mix-in amount had been increased. Remember: this is a $10 premium pint shipped from Graeter’s online store, not a $4.98 pint of Graeter’s in the Walmart freezer. It’s not a time for a brand to skimp on mix-ins. The premium ice cream niche has become overcrowded with brands willing to deliver decadent, mind-blowing pints of perfectly executed ice cream bases, plentiful chunks, and exotic flavors. So I’m grading against those other pint options now. 7/10.
