Coconut Base: A smooth, creamy, and rich ice cream base with a sweet coconut flavor. The coconut flavor is strong enough to stand up against Graeter’s chocolate chips without being cloying or tasting artificial.
Coconut Flakes: Small coconuts flakes are mixed throughout the base with a few on most every spoon. These are crunchy, adding texture, as well as some additional coconut flavor.
Chocolate Chips: Graeter’s standard chocolate chips, dark-ish in flavor—always a gamble as to amount and size. Sometimes I hit the jackpot with plentiful gigantic chunks; other times, it’s a bust with just a few flakes of small and medium size. The chocolate melts in my mouth; I do like to take my time and really savor it. There’s quite a mix of chunk sizes in this pint with a least a few biggies in my half pint serving. I consider this pint generally a success, not a bust, as to chocolate amount, but a more generous amount would have pushed the rating up a point or two.
Overall: Graeter’s Coconut Chocolate Chip is a flavor combination that I can wholeheartedly endorse. Coconut and chocolate desserts are top tier, first menu choice for me. This pint lands the decadent coconut base well with a flavor that keeps the coconut taste natural but bold enough to stand up against Graeter’s standard dark-ish chocolate chunks.
But my pint didn’t have the crazy, ginormous chocolate chunks that the best, most memorable Graeter’s pints contain. Yes, there were plenty of small and medium chunks, just not the biggies that make Graeter’s one of my faves. There’s a randomness to the distribution of chocolate in any Graeter’s pint, so you YMMV. I would scoop this flavor again if it was carried at my local Walmart for $5 per pint, but probably not pay to ship it to my home for $10 per pint. Recommended if local to you and reasonably priced. 8/10.
