Ice Cream Review Graeter's Cookies and Cream

Review

Sweet Cream Ice Cream: Yes, Graeter’s knows how to make a simple but effective sweet cream base. This pint exemplifies that fact. The base is a classic sweet cream: thick, rich, creamy, milky, and with a hint of custard from the eggs. It’s simple but enjoyable and refreshing.

Oreo Chunks: Yes, the real thing, actual Oreos. You know: two black cocoa chocolate wafer cookies with a cream center. Graeter’s seems to be using large chunks and even whole cookies in its take on this flavor. Not many small chunks or even crumbled cookie bits that some brands spread profusely throughout their pints.

The cookies are still mostly dry inside, not soggy, perhaps due to their large size. There’s a moderate amount of cookies in the pint. In these big cookie chunks, the cream filling stays firmer, so I really get a strong hit of the cream filling. On the other hand, had there been more smaller cookie bits, they might have given the pint more of an Oreo flavor. A trade off.

Overall: Graeter’s Cookies & Cream is a classic flavor, and as I’ve observed before, Graeter’s does the classics very well. The sweet cream base is a fairly pure flavor here because Graeter’s didn’t include many smaller Oreo crumbles in the base that would otherwise have added some cookie flavor to the base. The base is a solid, clean canvas on which to present the Oreos. And the Oreos are big chunks, including some whole, uncrushed Oreos. I can really taste the cream filling in these big chunks. Yes, they could have included even more Oreos and taken this pint to the next level. But it’s interesting to see Graeter’s unique take on this classic, and I enjoyed it. 8/10.
