Ice Cream review Graeter's Dark Chocolate Brownie

Review

Dark Chocolate Ice Cream: A bold dark chocolate base—the boldest I’ve had recently. Smooth, thick, rich, creamy. Dense to scoop—it takes a while to temper.

Brownie Bits: Chewy, soft brownie chunks. More cakey than fudgey in texture. The brownie flavor is overwhelmed by the bold base for the most part. I do get some sweet, chocolatey notes from the brownies. The chunks are cube-shaped about 1/4 inch across. They provide some texture to the pint—very chewy. I wouldn’t describe them as fudgy though. My main complaint is that there aren’t many brownie chunks.

Overall: Graeter’s Dark Chocolate Brownie does a great job nailing a dark chocolate base—a bold, but not too bold dark chocolate. After scooping many of their pints, I believe Graeter’s does basic flavors very well. But the brownie chunks in this pint? There aren’t many of them, as you can see from the cross section picture. My usual gripe, I know, I know; “more mix-ins, if you please.” This pint would’ve really benefited from the inclusion of Graeter’s signature chocolate chips to make up for the lack of brownie chunks. There just aren’t enough mix-ins to justify the $10 pint price.

The mix-in ratio doesn’t rise to the level of a premium pint. The brownies add some texture, yes, and some sweet, chocolate-y flavor. But that flavor doesn’t stand up well against the bold dark chocolate base. For me, the brownies would’ve been more enjoyable with a fudgier texture or even a crispy, caramelized edge texture—not this overly chewy texture. Good, but room for improvement. 7/10.

Back blurb

Over a century ago, Regina Graeter, our family matriarch, stubbornly refused to modernize the way she made ice cream. Today, we remain just as stubborn, honoring her legacy of making the best ice cream you’ll ever taste. Now in our fourth generation, we still make ice cream the same way Regina did, in small-batch French Pots, just 2 ½ gallons at a time. Indulge & Enjoy!

Deep, dark chocolate ice cream complemented with fudgy chocolate brownie bits.
