Review

Mint Base: A smooth, creamy, milky base. Sweet at first, but not too sweet, with the mint flavor predominating on the finish. We’re not huge fans of mint ice cream, but this base was refreshing. It’s easy to mess up a mint base. Too much mint can overwhelm the other flavors in the pint. And an artificial mint can lend a taste more like mouthwash than ice cream. Graeter’s nailed this flavor with just the right amount of natural peppermint oil.

Chocolate Chips: The classic, reliable quality dark chocolate chips that Graeter’s uses in their pints. Dark, but not bitter. Let them melt in your mouth to really savor the rich flavor. They vary wildly in size—tiny slivers, medium sized chunks, giant irregularly shaped meteors of chocolate. There’s some chocolate on almost every spoon. Digging out a large chunk has the thrill of winning the lottery. It keeps you scooping for another big one.

Overall: Graeter’s Mint Chocolate Chip is a flavor journey on a spoon: first the sweet dense base delights, then the mint hits you with just enough fizz and pop, and finally you savor the dark chocolate chips as they melt in your mouth. Wow. It’s everything we want from this classic flavor. Graeter’s offers mostly basic, old school flavors, yes, but they’re uniformly delicious—reliably high quality. Recommended.
