Ice Cream Review Graeter's Strawberry Chocolate Chip

Review

Strawberry Ice Cream: Sweet, rich, creamy. A light pink in color, probably natural, not artificial, if the ingredients are to be believed. A natural, mild strawberry flavor—fruity and refreshing—again natural, not artificial, according to the ingredient list. Small bits of strawberry in the base don’t add much flavor, but are small enough that they also don’t add any iciness. A solid if somewhat mild strawberry base.

Chocolate Chips: Graeter’s signature chocolate chips—which are not, in fact, chips. Instead, they are chocolate chunks with a wild variety of sizes and shapes. For me, the chocolate in this pint tastes darker, but perhaps that is simply the effect of the chocolate tasted against the strawberry base flavor. This chocolate melts in your mouth easily, but not quite as quickly as the ganache you often find in ice cream. Some of the chunks are ginormous, an inch across—fun to discover and dig out of the pint.

Sadly, there’s only a moderate amount of the chocolate in the pint. A Graeter’s pint is always a gamble as to the amount of chocolate included. Some days, it’s a big win at the Graeter’s casino. But it was not today. For a Graeter’s pint, this one was a little light on the chocolate. This is an existential problem for a Graeter’s flavor—without generous chocolate chunk mix-ins, there’s no reason for the flavor to exist.

Overall: Graeter’s Strawberry Chocolate Chip is pretty good, but could’ve been better. It’s a mild strawberry-flavored pint with only a mediocre amount of chocolate chunks. You may have missed this pint—it was a limited edition available only April – May 2022.

The base is good, rich and creamy, standard Graeter’s quality, with a subtle, natural strawberry flavor. And the dark chocolate chunks are good quality as well, but there could have been significantly more of them to qualify this as a premium pint.

Yes, dark chocolate is a good combination with strawberry ice cream. But this pint is not over the top, like some premium pints—not bold in its strawberry flavor or generous with its chocolate mix-ins. It’s more of a mild and basic flavor, which is what Graeter’s does well. But the execution here didn’t really excite much. Good, not great. 7/10.

Back blurb

Over a century ago, Regina Graeter, our family matriarch, stubbornly refused to modernize the way she made ice cream. Today, we remain just as stubborn, honoring her legacy of making the best ice cream you’ll ever taste. Now in our fourth generation, we still make ice cream the same way Regina did, in small-batch French Pots, just 2 ½ gallons at a time. Indulge & Enjoy!

Our signature chocolate chips paired with rich, sweet strawberries create this seasonal delight.
