Review

When an ice cream pint is named “White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle,” I think of a chocolate candy truffle with a cream filling, expecting small, whole candies throughout the pint, or halved or quartered candy pieces. But there are none of those in this pint. Instead, this pint is a deconstructed version of a white chocolate raspberry truffle, the different elements of the pint adding up to the equivalent of a chocolate truffle confection.

Base: A sweet, creamy and smooth white chocolate base. A good base to build other flavors upon: while quite sweet, it doesn’t interfere with or overpower other flavors shining through.

Ribbons: Raspberry ribbons throughout, some in every spoonful. Thin, small ribbons, difficult to isolate from the white chocolate base. They lend a strong raspberry flavor and a hint of texture, more a sweet jam raspberry than a tart fruit. The small but plentiful raspberry ribbons somewhat overwhelm the white chocolate at times, but it’s a pleasant combination.

Chocolate: On the package, Häagen-Dazs refers to the chocolate in this pint as “truffle pieces.” Again, the chocolate here is not pieces of an entire truffle confection, but just pieces of a soft chocolate candy shell. A darker chocolate that melts in the mouth like a ganache. Well-distributed throughout the pint, some on almost every spoonful. Chocolate of widely varying sizes and shapes—some surprisingly large, irregular chunks, some tiny slivers. At times, reminiscent of the variety of chocolate pieces in a pint of Graeter’s. Finding a larger chunk is a surprise akin to winning the lottery; so good.

Overall: A deconstructed chocolate truffle with contrasting white chocolate, raspberry, and dark chocolate flavors each shining through at times; I enjoyed the generally well-balanced variety of these flavors immensely.
