Ice Cream Review Jeni's Buttercream Birthday Cake

Review

Buttercream Ice Cream: A rich, smooth, creamy, buttery base. Above all: it’s sweet. Many Jeni’s bases include cream cheese—and that’s true of this one as well. But I’m not really tasting cream cheese, let alone buttercream—just sweetness, a cake batter sweetness, if anything. Regardless, I enjoyed it because I was in the mood for something rich and decadent.

Spongy Yellow Cake: Small, crumbled bits of cake. There was something off in their texture, perhaps because the cake was gluten-free. It wasn’t a sponge cake texture—too crumbly to be a sponge cake. The flavor was bland, nonspecific. There wasn’t much of this mix-in in my pint.

Rainbow and Rosette Sprinkles: These were multicolored candy sprinkles, some thin and long, others round and flat. If they have a flavor other than “sugar” I can’t taste it. They did add a lot of sweetness to the ice cream and fun, crunchy texture. They weren’t dissolved into the base at all. The pint was absolutely packed with sprinkles, so there was plenty on every spoonful.

Overall: Jeni’s Buttercream Birthday Cake is rich birthday cake flavor that doesn’t skimp on the sprinkles.

Jeni’s describes the pint as “Buttercream ice cream that’s rich with notes of vanilla and butter and has a decadent, spoon-coating, icing-like texture. Spongy, pale yellow (gluten-free!) cake pieces lend crumbly, moist cake texture. And, just for fun, two kids of sprinkles — rainbow and rosette — and lots of them.”

I enjoyed the base. I couldn’t really taste butter or vanilla or buttercream frosting in the base—it tasted to me like a very sweet cake batter flavor, and I was loving it.

The cake pieces were disappointing though, probably because they were gluten-free. They were small, crumbly, and lacked flavor. And there weren’t too many of them. This pint could be improved simply by including real cake chunks.

The sprinkles were fun and there were plenty of them. While they didn’t add any flavor other than sweetness, I welcomed their crunchy texture. They helped make up for the lack of cake chunks.

For me, it was an enjoyable pint because I have a major sweet tooth, even though the cake chunks could have been better. 8/10.

Back blurb

Let’s rewind to the era of real buttercream worthy of a once-a-year celebration. Spongy, pale yellow cake. Bouffant-high buttercream frosting. Blue and pink rosettes all over. It’s high time these perfect, pastel-hued, tiered confections stop living in our imaginations and cartoons. This is what a birthday cake should taste like. Don’t call it a comeback. Call it a return to glory.
