Review

Jeni’s Salty Caramel is smooth and creamy, but not too sweet. The first taste is a strong caramel, then a pronounced but not overpowering salt, and finally a pleasant hint of smoke on the finish. Jeni’s claims to make their caramel for this pint in a kettle over an open fire, and you can taste some of that rustic quality in this flavor.

It’s understandable that some people are huge fans of this unique pint. But we almost always prefer a pint with some mix-ins to vary the flavor and texture, and the same is true here. So for us, this is a good base, but too straightforward. Salty Caramel is an effective premium base, but for $9 per pint we expect more than a basic, single note flavor.

Overall: Jeni’s Salty Caramel is a delicious premium base, but nothing more, not really a fully realized pint. It’s like buying a premium vanilla pint. So then the next question is: what are you going to do with that pint? Because you’re not just going to eat that whole plain pint without something else. Salty Caramel would make a good start to a sundae, a decadent middle in an ice cream cookie sandwich, or a perfect scoop (or two) on your Sunday morning Bavarian waffles. But it needs something else to feel like a complete dessert.

Front Blurb

Fire-toasted sugar with sea salt, vanilla, and grass-grazed milk. A perfect balance of salty and sweet.

Back Blurb

It was at a French bakery where I worked throughout school that I first heard about “salted caramel”—called “salty” caramel by a chef in his thick French accent. When I began making Salty Caramel in 1996, people would drive from neighboring towns states for a taste. We still make caramel the way we always have, with sugar toasted in a kettle over an open fire. Blended with vanilla and a heavy pinch of sea salt, the nuttiness of the caramel blooms. The reward: no better flavor in the world.
