Caramel Base: A thick, creamy, rich base with a strong caramel vibe. Velvety on the tongue, savory. Very sweet, but never cloying. If you like caramel ice cream, this will delight.
Toffee Bits: These are small bits of dissolved toffee pieces mixed throughout the ice cream, providing little sweet, rich pockets of flavor. A nice contrast against the caramel base, worth savoring. But I was expecting a crunchy toffee mix-in, so at first I was disappointed. Still, this pint really grew on me. It reminds me of Jeni’s Brown Butter Almond Brittle, but the toffee bits in this Straus Creamery pint are even more dissolved than in Jeni’s version—as in totally dissolved. Nothing crunchy about this Straus pint—smooth spooning all the way through.
Overall: Straus Family Creamery Caramel Toffee is a rich, premium caramel base with dollops of dissolved toffee bits well-distributed throughout. A simple flavor that I find myself slowing down to savor, to really experience the levels of caramel flavor. Yes, it’s something of a plain pint—like a pint of premium vanilla. After a few savored tastes, it could benefit from adding your own mix-ins or toppings, or serve as an exceptional middle layer between two warm cookies or fresh Belgian waffles. Worth a taste because of its stellar quality. Oh, and every ingredient is organic. 7/10.
