Base: The base has a buttery aroma. Thick and creamy, very much a premium product, it tastes extremely sweet, but the buttercream flavor is not overwhelming. This is quite a balancing act to pull off. What’s great about this base is that it captures the flavor of buttercream without offending, without being too much. But this is the kind of decadent base you really need to taste just a spoonful or two of everyday to really appreciate. Otherwise, its sweetness tends to blowout your tastebuds.

Almond brittle: The back of the pint notes that the almond brittle mix-in is called “krokan, a Norwegian treat made of carmelized butter and almond brittle.” These small slivers of almond brittle are plentiful throughout the pint, present in almost every spoonful, but sometimes might be mistaken simply as almonds, not as brittle. This is because the brown butter caramel around the brittle has melted into the base.

This caramel adds another welcome second dimension to the sweetness of the base itself. A big piece of brittle that hasn’t dissolved into the base is a delightful treasure to discover—a softer brittle, only mildly crunchy, if at all—but unfortunately these large brittle bits are not as common as I would like. Perhaps it’s a bit randomness—the number of brittle bits in each pint. But half of this pint lacked a big chunk of brittle, and that serving left me feeling dejected, unlucky, and deprived. For this lapse, I was compelled to ding Jeni’s one point in its pint rating.

Dear Jeni’s: I love you now, and I will love you always and forever, but I paid almost $9 for this pint, an almost 100% price increase over competing brands. For that price, my love, you owe me more big chunks, especially when the chunks are this delicious. Sincerely, The Emperor

Overall: a supremely decadent and double-sweet (buttercream and caramel) ice cream that would be perfect with the addition of more large almond brittle bits.

This flavor is a nod to certain beloved children’s book author (hint: think giant peaches and chocolate factories) who adored krokan, a Norwegian treat made of carmelized butter and almond brittle. He wrote that he’d dreamed about the flavor for days—and who can blame him? The way our almond brittle melts into buttercream ice cream, creating golden pockets of caramel and crunch, is absolutely splendidlyumptious.
